00 / Project Overview

I led the redesign and development of AR features for a mobile app that empowers staff at partner organizations to receive video tasks, record and edit content, and upload videos for review and delivery.

01 / Challenge

Although the app was functionally sound, its video recording flow needed to be revamped to remove friction, fix accessibility issues, boost user confidence, and ultimately drive higher recipient engagement for our clients.

02 / Project Goals

The primary objectives were:

  • to improve video engagement rates for client organizations by raising the overall quality of the delivered content.

  • to increase the percentage of completed video assignments by streamlining the video recording experience.

  • to help users feel more at ease while recording videos by implementing augmented reality features.

03 / UX interviews

Uncovering pain points

I conducted in-depth interviews to gather insights and feedback from two key stakeholder groups:

Platform admins at client organizations

  • Expressed frustration with employees failing to record the videos they were assigned.

  • Reported issues with poorly positioned videos where employees’ faces were off-center, too close, or too far away from the camera.

  • Said they were unhappy with the number of videos that had to be rerecorded due to messy backgrounds and poor lighting.

  • Asked for a thumbnail customization feature to improve the look of the video preview for end recipients.

Users recording videos

  • Disclosed that they often put off recording videos because they didn’t like how they looked on camera that day

  • Reported experiencing significant accessibility issues while trying to read scripts during recording

  • Stated that they thought the recording interface was overly cluttered and did not understand what some of the buttons did

  • Expressed frustration with having to re-record videos because they could not trim off the awkward starts or ends of a recording

04 / Pain Points & Solutions

Unappealing or Distracting Backgrounds

Pain Point: Staff often recorded videos in front of backgrounds that were visually distracting or unprofessional.

Solution: Introduced an AR feature allowing users to blur or replace their video backgrounds.

Challenges overcome:

  • Determining optimal blur strength to balance privacy and realism

  • Addressing low-quality background images selected by organizations

  • Reducing visual artifacts and jagged edges in “green screen” effects

05 / Outcomes

Both client organizations and staff appreciated the improved recording experience and streamlined workflow.

Business Impact: The background masking feature directly led to new institutional clients whose compliance needs required confidential information to be obscured in recorded environments.

Scalability: The updated app enabled institutions to reliably assign and collect high-quality personalized video content at scale.
